Art/Work Ch. 3-5

Chapter 3: Submission Materials Reading this chapter reminded me of the times I wanted to enter competitions and all the documents required to enter them. I dreaded the fact I had to review my resume, pick the best images, and write an artist statement. I think I dreaded this because I don't articulate words well. And, so that means that I would have someone else review my work which would take even longer to do. The second paragraph makes sense by saying that I should have these sorts of documents prepared already. The only thing I have prepared is a headshot of myself should someone ask for it. I also have a project statement prepared which is something I worked on during this spring semester.  Page 62: I really appreciate this section that talks about the dimensions of a photograph should be. I sometimes have a challenging time picking out the correct dimensions for my photos so this really helps me.  Chapter 4: Promotion During the month of February, I was struggling...

Goals & Plans Update

Image
(Siblings)  (Dog: Toby)  (Dog: Copper) Goals: At the beginning of the semester, I made a list of goals that I wanted to accomplish this spring.  Here are the ones I was able to accomplish: -Find Internship/Apply/Get Offer -Build Successful Network Team -Begin Grad School Process I am glad I was able to set my mind to these goals and complete them by the end of the semester. I will be going to my internship this summer from June-August in Houston as a photographer for a special needs camp.  I was able to build a more successful network by having regular meetings with my professors and receiving guidance for my future endeavors. I also had regular meetings with career development to help me begin the process of getting into grad school and which program I best fit in.  Plans: After the semester is over, I plan to relax for a bit before I get into something new again. I want to spend time with my family and live in the moment before I go off to my internship....

Art World Thoughts - Jerry Saltz

During the summer I remember feeling hopeless about my future. I remember applying to a tech school as a backup plan should my art degree fail. I began to believe that what I was studying was not worth investing my money or time in. I convinced myself that I should study something else and I began the process of enrolling in classes at the tech school I was admitted to. Thinking back on this I begin to realize how wrong I was to desire to pursue something that didn't spark passion in me. I was so wrong to think that artists were nobodies and that creating art was a waste of time. That all those times I had gone out and photographed my surroundings was a complete waste of time. How wrong was I to think like this... I was so wrong to this that way. The first section of this essay just really reminded me of my way of thinking during last year in the summer. I can't blame everything on covid but I will admit that with covid happening, my sense of direction was lost and I felt hopel...

Cool News!

Image
I was asked a week ago to photograph the new art exhibition at our school gallery. I was a bit nervous because I have never done anything like that before. Well, I went in there with my camera and other equipment and began shooting.  Turned out those images I took will be published in a magazine and will have my name on them. I was not even expecting this at all. This is huge to me because I have never had any of my work published. I was also asked if I wanted to keep shooting the gallery for the remainder of the time that I am a student. I said, YES! DUH! Anyway, I've put images below of the work from the gallery in the art building.

Art/Work Ch. 8-10

Ch. 8 - Rejection: It's Not You, It's Them      There are a few things that I am not afraid of that other people are. For example, horror movies and insects. I am not afraid of heights, roller coasters, bees, clowns, snakes, dentists, you name it. There is however something I fear with my life and that is rejection. I fear rejection as a child would fear clowns or spiders. Rejection is the clown in my life.     Rejection is a big part of life. Yeah, yeah, I know. Honestly, I don't think anyone enjoys getting rejected to their dream school or dream job. Shoot, I've gotten rejected for both of these things. I often fear rejection because I base my worth on success. I am being fair to myself, am I?      I think the image on page 208 is quite funny. I wish I had that kind of suit! Just reading these pages makes me reflect on the times that I entered my work for a photography competition. I had high hopes of receiving an email that said my work had bee...

Melissa Weiss - Summary

Image
I find it pretty sweet and interesting that Melissa has a BFA in photography and now is a potter. I think this goes to show that our passions evolve over time. In a way, I was able to connect with Melissa knowing we share several things in common like photography.  Taking a look at her work and learning more about it has really made me wonder what kind of person Melissa is. I think a lot of the time an artist's work is based on their personality. From hearing Melissa speak about her work it becomes evident that her work is who she is.

Artist Statement & Elevator Speech Draft

Artist Statement: My focus is to document abandoned places over a period of time and how they interact with the environment they are in. I am fascinated by creating narratives through pictures that tell a story of places that have been abandoned. I become intellectually challenged to publically demonstrate the beauty behind forgotten architectural structures.
